The Fabulous Fifties

The Fabs was formed when some “mature” (over 50) members of the Hunter’s Creek Women’s Association expressed a desire to have an organization for senior residents of Hunter’s Creek.  From the original sixteen members that met on October 28, 1998, the Fabs have grown into an organization of well over 100 members – and are still growing. Monthly meetings are held on the third Monday of each month, and ages range from 50 to 90 years of age.

In addition to our social activities, the Fabs are also a Service Organization and are associated with generosity throughout the Orlando area – including Hunter’s Creek - where we are always ready to volunteer for any civic event, such as the Annual Celebration in Hunter’s Creek. We volunteer for Relay for Life, Hunter’s Creep Nights, Golf Tournaments and work very closely with the women’s organization in their charitable endeavors, since many of the Fabs are also members of HCWA. The Women’s Golf League of Hunter’s Creek was one of the activities started by the Fabs.

In our “It Takes a Village” way of volunteering, Thanksgiving dinners are donated to the needy and homeless at the Orlando Rescue Mission, as well as Hope Totes (filled with basic personal necessities) for Easter. The Fabs sponsor tours of the Rescue Mission and Donation Drives for the homeless. “Angels” from the Fabs (and their husbands) volunteer at Give Kids the World Village each week. The Sewing Angels have produced more pillows for the children at GKTW than any other volunteer organization. We collect food for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and after disasters work to distribute food to those in need. The Russell Home for Atypical Children is another charity that we support. Many of the Fabs unobtrusively volunteer at hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and battered women’s shelters, as well as support members of the armed forces.

Our social activities include The Breakfast Club; Golf League; Brunches; Luncheons; Dinners; Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Christmas Parties; High Tea; Bunco; Shopping Expeditions; Gambling Trips to Biloxi, New Orleans, Atlantic City, Hard Rock Café, and on the Sterling Cruise Line; Line Dancing; Riverboat Rides; to name a few. The Fabs also had the honor of being the first organization to have its own personal tour of the newly-christened Disney Cruise Line Ship, “The Magic.”  Our cultural activities encompass tours of the Cosimo Rosselli (painter for the Sistine Chapel) exhibit at Rollins College (where some of us volunteered to work as docents); the Morse Museum; the theatre; and ballet performances.

The Fabs represent members from every neighborhood, apartment complex, and condominium group. In addition to the women, the gentlemen (Mr. Fabs) are also actively involved. As well as retirees, we have members who are still employed in corporate America as Disney Cast Members, teachers, retail workers, entrepreneurs and more.

Our organization offers something for everyone. Attendance is never mandatory. Fabs participate when they can and in the activity of their choice. If a Fab is in need, everyone will help out, and support groups are spontaneously established. The most wonderful things that have evolved from our organization are the friendships and social activities that have sprung up among members as a direct result of being a Fab. New members have expressed delight that Hunter’s Creek has such a lively and caring senior organization.
