Community Emergency Response Team By Jack Callender
Coordinated by the USA Homeland Security Department, the Hunter’s Creek Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is made up of residents of our community who have come forward and been trained to assist during emergencies. We do not hear about them a lot, because thankfully, we only need their active help occasionally. But when we need it, such as during the forest fires bordering Hunter’s Creek (HC) in 2000 or the hurricanes of 2004, the assistance is there.
Many HC residents have been trained and certified to be members of our local CERT unit, but people move away or for other reasons may no longer be active, so we need a fresh supply of participants to join the veterans each year. If you would like more information about CERT, send an e-mail to expressing your interest and someone will contact you to answer your questions. What is CERT? By Jim Kirwin
The Hunter's Creek Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) was formed to respond to and assist the residents in case we were struck by a major disaster such as a hurricane or tornado. CERT consists of volunteers from our community who are interested in helping in an emergency. These volunteers need not have any prior training, because the training is provided by Orange County Fire Rescue under the auspices of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. CERT training provides you with the tools to deal with most potentially catastrophic situations until help arrives.
Why not leave rescue duties to Orange County? In case of minor emergencies, this may be appropriate. However, if we were hit by a tornado or a major hurricane, it could be days before enough resources would make it to Hunter's Creek. During that time, we would be on our own. We may not be able to wait for Orange County personnel if people are trapped, injured or property is destroyed. In addition to helping victims, CERT members also serve as extra sets of eyes and ears for Orange County Fire Rescue, reporting conditions and getting proper resources to the areas that need it most.
If you are interested in being a member of the Hunter's Creek CERT group, call the Town Hall at 407-240-6000, and ask for a CERT representative to contact you.
